Day 2 Biltmore and more: Today, visit the luxurious family home of George and Edith Vanderbilt. The Biltmore Estate is the largest privately-owned house in the United States and you will marvel at the elegance of 65 fireplaces, priceless objects and more. After a field-to-table lunch at the estate, enjoy a tasting at Antler Hill Village and Winery on the property. Tonight, be entertained with a show at Flat Rock Playhouse. (B, L, D)
Day 3 We are off on an adventure: This morning we will enjoy a tour of all things Asheville. Driving through the city of Asheville will include some or all of the following: Montford historic district, a snapshot in time from 1890-1925, the River Arts District (RAD) where over 250 artists have their studios, the Basilica of St. Lawrence, the Mast General Store, the Grove Park Inn, opened in 1913 where 10 presidents have stayed and several stops in downtown Asheville where you will learn about the history of Ashville and how it evolved into a city of arts and entertainment. We will stop at the Grove Arcade; the dream of Edwin Wiley Grove and you will have time for lunch and to briefly explore on your own.
We will also visit Billy Grahams Training Center at the Cove. Today you will enjoy a guided tour of the Training Center including the Eckard Chapel Room, Pictorial Displays, the Chatlos Memorial Chapel, and the Prayer Room. Adjacent to the Chatlos Memorial Chapel is Ruths Prayer Garden, designed to offer a peaceful place for prayer and meditation amid the natural beauty and serenity of The Cove. This Garden honors the memory of Ruth Bell Grahama faithful woman of prayerthe 1.5-acre garden contains more than 80 species of garden plants, including a mix of native plants, trees, shrubs, perennials, and 15 varieties of roses. The upper woodland garden is planted in large sweeps of woodland shrubs and perennials, with large open areas of ground cover. The lower paths around the chapel walk contain a mix of perennials and roses planted in the English style of perennial gardening.
Our tour concludes with a stop at the Thomas Wolfe Historical Site. Considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature, Thomas Wolfe immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfes colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of Altamont Asheville, North Carolina, and Dixieland the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse, earned the Victorian period house a place as one of American literatures most famous landmarks. The Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site preserves the historic boarding house in downtown Asheville known as the Old Kentucky Home. The house, a National Historic Landmark, has been a memorial to Ashevilles native son and North Carolinas most famous author Thomas Clayton Wolfe since 1949.
After some afternoon R&R at your hotel, take in a southern barbecue dinner & show hosted by the Whitewater Bluegrass Company Band at the Blue Ridge Mountain Opry. (B, D)
